Quote of the Month: PJQ

It's the last day of January 2009...

And my favorite award-winning "Quote of the Month" comes from the newly
minted Illinois Governor Patrick J. Quinn after he suceeded the
disgraced cuckoo Blogojavich...

"One day a peacock. The next day a feather duster."

(As quoted in today's New York Times).

Words to live by! LOL!

It's Friday the 30th and Here's What I Think...

Times Square Mannequin 052Back by popular demand, (Yeah, right?!) Here's what I think...

* I'm glad it's Friday... And that work week is behind me.

* If I had three million dollars, I would buy this mausoleum and throw parties in it til I needed it...

* I forgot the Sidekick mobile device at home one day this week. I had an odd feeling of disconnection... Guess what? I survived!

* The upcoming new and improved Amazon Kindle intrigues me. Could I give up newspapers and books? Well, I could give it a try... Got a while to wait yet.

* Why is email sent to my RoadRunner email accounts instantly forwarded to my Sidekick, but Gmail drags on and on... Why does my Time Warner Cable HDTV DVR need re-booting every other day now? Is Mercury in retrograde?

* Now Blagojevich is banned from public office in Illinois... He could still run on a national bi-partisan ticket with Sarah Palin in 2012 though. Perfect! One ticket, two cuckoos!

* I love getting email notifications that my paycheck was direct deposited. Woohoo! I don't take anything for granted these days!

* My new favorite cold winter night treat. Make a cup of herbal mint tea. Eat 72% dark chocolate. Bite, sip, bite, sip. Repeat... Heaven!

Wednesday's Word: EWR

EWR, abbreviation for Newark International Airport.

According to the NYTimes FYI:

What’s the logic behind the three-letter codes that airlines use to route your suitcase? Why is La Guardia LGA and not LAG? How did Newark become EWR?

A. According to Air Line Pilot, the journal of the Air Line Pilots Association, the three-letter system began in the 1930s as airline service expanded.

Newark’s airport cannot be NEW because the Navy reserves all codes beginning with the letter N. La Guaira Airport in Venezuela has LAG, so Fiorello’s namesake is LGA.

The most straightforward New York airport code, JFK, is actually highly unusual because it reflects a change in the airport’s name. Location identifiers are usually considered permanent. Chicago’s O’Hare, for instance, is ORD for the airport’s former name, Orchard Field.

When Idlewild Airport’s name was changed to Kennedy International Airport after President Kennedy’s death in 1963, its old identifier, IDL, was retired, then revived for use by the municipal airport of Indianola, Miss.

Even more confusing, Idlewild’s official name on city maps in 1963 was Anderson Field, after Maj. Gen. Alexander Anderson, a much-decorated war veteran.

It's A Smile for Me, Monday

Discovered this artist Elijah Black on this week's Top Ten Video Click List on LOGO. He was number 10 on the list. Not easy for a non-twink to make that list...

Let's hear it for the Bears...

Sunday This and Sunday That

ICE 036Icy cold day in Hell's Kitchen today! Crisp and invigorating as a glass of ice water!

Did the gym two days in a row. Good boy!

My gym membership runs out next week... And I'm pretty sure I don't want to stay at this gym... It's gone waaaay down hill and I have a hunch it's headed for bankruptcy or up for sale... Just my hunch, but I'm learning to trust my hunches lately!.... Plus, I've been there many years now... These times call for "Change"! Right? Right!

Weighed in at 195! Good boy!

Have been attending a church I used to attend a few years ago. Been liking it... Seems fresh again. This church is not about being all Jesus-ish or anything... Think of a non-Sectarian spiritual artistic musical kinda thang... Hallelujah!

Saw the current Battlestar Galactica on the DVR over the weekend! Am cautiously optimistic that the these final ten episodes won't disappoint and will be a fitting finale to my favorite sci-fi series! Launch vipers!

Did the grocery store today. Two actually. Got a goodly slew of stuff for meals for the work week ahead... Good boy!

Got some Snyder's Sour Dough pretzels and sharp cheddar cheese... Naughty boy! (But it could be much naughtier!)

Did all my laundry this weekend! Good boy!

Got me a haircut! (More than one!) Good boy!

Doggy is happiest when I'm here. I've been getting up and sleeping with him on the couch for the last hour before I get up to start the day... He likes that too... We're both good boys!

Rourke the Wrestler

I went to see The Wrestler today. One of those late morning matinees that are only $6, even in Times Square, NYC! W00t!

(Thanks to Lois, I still had $2 left on a Gift Card! So, W00t again!)

Frankly, I didn't even have any desire to see this film... But the Oscar buzz for Mickey Rourke intrigued me...

I remember M.R. from Diner.

In those days he was touted as being the next James Dean or Marlon Brando. He did seem to share their proclivities for self-destructive behaviors...

It is nice to see him make a comeback. It is.

Even though, in so many ways, he doesn't even look like himself anymore...

(But then, neither do I! Ha!)

The movie script is a poor man's Rocky with a WWE twist... Completely predictable at every turn... ("Yo, Adrienne. It's Me, Rocky"? ... Almost!)

If it weren't for Mickey it wouldn't have been made. If it weren't for Mickey, it wouldn't be worth seeing...

Glad I saw it, though...

The Political View from my Hell's Kitchen Perch

I think Hillary looked plum Presidential at yesterday's welcoming event at the State Department yesterday...

Am glad Caroline Kennedy is out of the running for the Senate seat as she wasn't ready. Though I think  she'd be good for the White House Arts Minister position (or whatever it's be called) that they keep buzzing about creating...

Don't know anything about this lady who got Hil's job, do you? Some commentator on CNN said she's worked closely with Hil. Any friend of Hil's is a friend o mine, I guess...

Our Governor Patterson got slammed today by columnists in the Daily News and the New York Times and looks like he's spiralling out of political favor for the way he botched the whole Senate seat replacement thing...

That would give Andrew Cuomo a leg up to challenge him in the next primaries... Which will likely happen... Although a fight could bloody the Dems and give an advantage to the hateful Guiliani who will prolly make a run for it on the other ticket because he has nothing better to do...

These are the rambling political predictions of a Hell's Kitchen madman blogger on a tired Friday evening...

On My Mind...

Snowy Times Square 023The following stuff has been on my mind lately...

~ Why do optical shops that sell eyeglasses have to act like used car salesmen? Yesterday, some guy tried to pitch me $650 lenses because they are made digitally? WTF? I bought only the frames and will find another optician to make the lenses... On my way out the door, he assured me he could also order the "inferior lenses"...

~ Arizona brand Green Tea with Pomegranate and Acai is very good... And it seems healthy, though, I have no clue if it really is. What is Acai, anyway?

~ I wish I had more energy after work to do things. But I'm always bushed. Can we start to use the word bushed again? Or is it too soon?

~ I liked Neale Donald Walsch's quote that Lady Donothing sent me today on the first day after Obama took office: "The future is brighter than ever. Not just humanity's future, but your own, personally... Things have shifted. The energy has been altered. You can feel it if you deeply tune in. This shift is not your imagination, nor is it merely on a national or global level. There is a shift in you... Feel it today, and use it to propel you to a wonderful tomorrow. In fact, do better than feel the energy. BE the energy. Be its Source. Then watch the conditions of your own life change."

~ Trader Joe's spiced chicken sausages are very good.

~ I need to eat more broccoli.

~ I think Caroline Kennedy would be a better Minister of the Arts than she would be as a United States Senator from New York. (We need a fighter!)

~ I've been enjoying making breakfasts and bag lunches at home. Saving money. Eating healthy. After years of expensive laziness and high restaurant bills, I never would've believed this...

~ I hate when I walk in a room at work and a colleague warns "Did you take a lot of vitamin C today?"

~ I'm surprised Bush didn't pardon more people before he left...

~ I've come to really like FaceBook... It grows on you...

~ Congratulations to Madame Secretary Hillary Clinton. Godspeed!

How to Check Circuit City Gift Card Balances

Circuit City Gift CardCircuit City announced last week it was going under...

I quickly called the number on the back of my Circuit City gift card to see how much $ is left on it...

The number printed on the back of the card is the wrong number!

So, I get some poor operator at some unrelated company who points out that Circuit City "unfortunately" printed the wrong number on the card...

Unfortunate indeed. For that guy... Cuz the whole world will be calling that number to try to salvage their gift cards...

Meanwhile, I googled around... And found the correct phone number to check your Circuit City gift card balance amounts...888-695-4880. Press 1 for English and enter your gift card number and it tells you the balance remaining.

Mine was 76 cents...

I just may send it off to Lady Donothing for her amazing Gift Card Collection with that 76 cent balance remaining.... My contribution to the ailing economy!

"Danger, Will Robinson": Bob May Dies

Sad news that Bob May, the actor who manipulated the iconic robot on 1960s TV's 'Lost in Space', has died of congestive heart failure at age 69.

The grandson of a vaudeville comedian, May was born here in NY in 1940 and began his career at age 2 in "Hellzapoppin". He appeared in motion pictures with Jerry Lewis and in several hit TV shows including "Time Tunnel" & "McHale's Navy" (See IMDB).

May always claimed he got the robot job simply because he happened to fit inside the robot's costume.

His masterful job included pacing the script for later looping by announcer Dick Tufeld while capturing the physical nuances of the emotions conveyed in the script.

His wild waving of the robot's arms while declaring "Danger! Danger!
Warning!" has become a cult favorite and his iconic trademark...

Bill Mumy (Will Robinson) has already added a lovely tribute
page for Bob May to his official website as he did for the late Jonathan
Harris
(Dr. Smith).

According to May's daughter, Deborah, Mr. May's favorite toast,
which he learned from his vaudevillian grandfather:

"May you live as long as you want to, and may you laugh as long as you live."

(Message composed on my T-Mobile Sidekick 2008 mobile device).

Thanks, Y'All

Tin Devil 2Thanks for all the well wishes and suggested remedies about yesterday's back spasms...

I'm *much* better today!

After a good night's sleep where I wasn't sleeping on top of a multitude of twisted blankets that I think were the main culprit from the night before...

Won't make that mistake again...

I was up to full speed today with a full gym workout and everything without a trace of pain...

Go figure!

... Headed off to my friendly neighborhood noveau Mexican for dinner... (See photo)...

The Best Laid Plans!

Damnation!

Well, I 've never seemed to have back trouble before....

But I certainly do this morning...

Winter 2009 Walk to WorkWas hurting a bit when I awoke... But figured it would pass...

I bundled up for Manhattan's 7 degrees and walked 10 blocks to breakfast (looking much like I did for yesterday's frigid walk to work, see photo)....

Felt fine sitting in the diner booth and reading the NYTimes while watching all the leftover nightlifers punch each other in the face... (Apparently one of them had a mere dollar to put toward the tab).

Soon as I got up and limped across the restaurant, I realized I had to take a taxi home from the breakfast diner... Luckily it was one of those higher van like things where you don't have to sit way down low like in a sedan... Not sure I could have gotten out of one of those...

Not a good sign for those planned adventurous activities of the day...

Especially not looking good for this morning's hike, of course. And I was really looking forward to it...

I guess tonight's retirement party is tenuous at this point, too.... Looks like the $60 I paid for that may go right down the drain, unless I can muster enough energy (via Ibuprofin) to manage to get there with a cane or something... ?

Why is it every time I pay in advance for something, I wind up not being able to do it....??? (And it's always the same things that require payment in advance!?!?!)

Well, I don't have to decide for tonight right now... Though, I should notify my colleagues of the possibility that I could be a "no show."

So, I guess it's a moment at a time, today....

And, at least, I have last night's season opener episide of BSG on the DVR waiting to get my mind off my troubles...

... And a bottle of ibuprofin....

It only hurts when I walk...

A Nice and Cold One

Three Day Weekend Starts Now!

Snow ShadowTGIF!

Three day weekend is already underway as I'm home from work and in my sweatsuit (read: pajamas), so that means, except for a dogwalk later, I'm just chillin...

On the drawing board for the three days ahead?...

Saturday: A nearby winter hike tomorrow morning with the hiking group... That's the plan, but we'll see how I feel in the A.M....

And then a ritzy retirement party at a fancy catering hall up in the Bronx somewhere for a revered former boss later Saturday evening... I'll commute up there with colleagues...

Sunday: Several activities pending on the agenda ranging from the spiritual to the social...

... Or nothing at all!

Monday: MLK, Jr. Day. Probably a quiet day at home to re-charge for the work week... But, we'll see...

Can you detect a pattern here? I'm not committing to nuttin'!

It's three days off.... But, a day at a time...

A Plane Crashes in Hell's Kitchen

Sunset Hudson 12I was wondering where all the emergency vehicles were going when I was out walking the doggy....

A U.S. Airways jet crash landed in the Hudson River, a couple blocks from here...

From TV news reports, it sounds like everyone survived...! Wow!

AMAZING!

I So Recommend: John's Background Switcher

I was telling Danny about this the other day...

And frankly, I think many of my friends would love it... Especially Ming, Lisa, and The Cheek

It's a brilliant app called John's Background Switcher...

It changes the background on your computer desktop every few seconds...

You choose the source material: Your own hard drive? Your own photo site? Your favorite photo site? An image search  through Yahoo or Google? Whatever!

The app is free... Although feel free to make a small contribution to the guy if you find you really love the thing like I do....

This explains everything...

A Week to Go!?!

Can you believe George W. Bush still has a whole week to go??

'To go'  is the key phrase, of course...

But as a co-worker pointed out today: "The last week can be the scariest"...

He's right... So???...

What Presidential pardons does GWB have up his sleeve??

I guess we'll know soon enough...

Frankly, I can't wait to see the Bushes hit the road...

Ba-bye, already!

A Take Care Sunday

019At least two people I know decide, each year, to avoid the actual holiday crush and to have a party the week-end after the New Year's holiday...

One friend left me a voice mail complaining that he has three such post-holiday bashs in his date book for the weekend. So, I should be happy I only had two...

Went to one party last night at a theatrical TV Producer's studio and apartment here in snowy and icy Hell's Kitchen... I see many faces from show business that I haven't seen since the prior year's party. This has been going on for about two decades now, I reckon... And these once a year snapshots are at the same time refreshing and occasionally chilling...

There's another post-Holiday party down in a Greenwich Village townhouse today... This one isn't exactly annual... But every few years without rhyme or reason... A cabaret singer I first met in 1982 when she bicycled up to me to tell me she was a fan... And her husband, a revered Off-Broadway director.

My plan was to get down there when it first started at noon and before it gets crazy jammed... Which it ALWAYS does, and certainly is by now and will continue to be into the wee hours.

But, I'm not feeling great today....

Just napped on the couch for five hours after breakfast and have a lingering headache...That's very unusual for me... Although the doggy was happy to have the company!

015Hell's Kitchen was a treacherous ice sheet this morning... Ice , ice , everywhere... So I had to divert to a closer Greek diner for breakfast today. The food was half the quality and the meal was a coupla more bucks more... Reminds me why I like my other Greek place so well... (See photo!)...

Although it feels like a hangover, it couldn't be "drink" as I had only 3/4ths of a Bud Light beer at the party last night...

But the food was definitely rich and wonderful... And yes, I tasted everything... I had to... The hostess wanted to know what I thought of her cooking... (Insert oink oink sound effects here).

Anyway... I really gotta be in tip-top shape for the workweek ahead...

So, I guess the CORRECT answer, I'm somewhat sorry to say, is to skip today's party altogether and just "take it easy" for the remainder of the day...

I'll send them a card with my regrets...

I guess I'll make myself some tea and think about whipping up a healthy dinner of something...

Let it Snow, Let it Snow Saturday

It's our first snowy Saturday of 2009 in Hell's Kitchen. If you look at the photo I posted yesterday, you get an idea...

Although, it's not bad yet.... They say it's gonna get worse later...I'm skidding sliding  heading off to an Annual Post-Holiday party that I go to every year for the last twenty, I reckon...

At least, it's here in the 'hood...

It starts at 7:30pm... Not late for some. But late for this early riser...

Pretty much lazing around today...

Important work, actually... People often don't relax enough... Silly people.

First TGIF of 2009

Snow IMG_1809It's the first workday Friday of 2009...

... And I needed it!

Winter Storm Warning in effect this weekend...

So I got a jump start on the downstairs laundryroom.... I figure EVERYone and their brother will trying to be productive and do their laundry during the snowstorm... So, I'll be done with that chore already...

Hope y'all have a great weekend!

I plan a restful and re-juvenating one... With a little work related paperwork thrown in...

Pie in the Face Thursday

Guess I'm in a post holiday slump...

The work week is dragging by. I haven't quite adjusted to the fact that the holiday vacation is over. I'm definitely draggin...

I've set my alarm a half hour earlier (5.30am) to get more done in the mornings before I head to work. But, it's still not enough time.

The afternoons after work find me too exhausted to do much of anything.

Did manage to cook a meal on the DeLonghi grill last nite... It works great... And those Omaha steaks are terrific... I thaw one in the shrink wrap in a bowl of water for a few minutes before grilling...

I have a fridge full of stuff bought at Trader Joe's that I need to devour in coming weeks.

Started making Tuna Salad with Hummous instead of mayo for lunches. Nice! Look forward to trying the flavored hummouses next week...

Am saving a slew by eating/preparing meals at home, and the fact is: they are healthier meals!

Not a huge fan of Oprah these days, but I liked her resolution to "Be Healthy, Strong and Fit" or something like that. Makes more sense than a goal for a certain weight...

At least, I have my 30 block walks to/from work every day... It's the only thing standing between me and couch potatoland... These are especially invigorating in the winter!

Did you see the White House photo opp of all the living Presidents with Obama...

I was thinking with the Gaza War now added to the pile of gifts that Bush is dumping on his predecessor, that Obama could have punched Bush right in the nose right on camera.

OK... maybe that's too violent.

How about a "Pie in the Face"?

That would have been perfect...

Paradox Monday

LeonardHere I am heading out the door to the first day of work after a 12 day holiday break.

This makes me unhappy.

Here I am heading out the door to my job during a time when many many people don't have a job to go to today.

For this I'm grateful.

It's a paradox.

Life is full of them...

Looking Through To The Bright Side

As the New Year's extended holiday vacation sadly gets closer to coming to an abrupt and inevitable end...

... Let's take a moment to look at the bright side!...

Just think,

We can't possibly see these hideous tacky glasses again til the year 3000!

New Year's 2009
...And that's perfectly fine with me!

Todd's Ten Twenty Commandments

Hell's Kitchen Sunrise1. Live each day to the fullest!
2. Be present.
3. Recognize my own patterns.
4. Be kind.
5. Spread laughter and joy.
6. Empower and encourage.
7. Keep it light.
8. Love trumps fear.
9. Be happy.
10. Be creative and unique.
11. Take good care and live healthfully.
12. Acceptance is the answer.
13. It's a Day at a Time, sometimes a Minute at a Time.
14. Go with intuition...
15. Make a difference.
16. Be grateful.
17.  Seize the day!
18. Be authentic.
19. Do right.
20. Yes We Can.

Gretchen Rubin on The Happiness Project wrote tips on writing your own commandments. So those were mine!

The New Year, it seems to me, is an especially pertinent time for this little exercise...

P.S. Congratulations to Gretchen who just nailed a job writing for Slate in the New Year!

Blogging Manifesto for 2009

This is a technical post on Blogging issues that will be beyond the ability of most readers to comprehend... I'm gonna pre-time it so it falls down among the posts...

Unless you are an experienced Blogger.... You might want to skip this post altogether...

During this holiday break, I've been trying to catch up on commenting on some of my blog friend's blogs...

I've noticed what a pain it is to have to put in Word Verification each time I leave a comment...

So to make it easier on my own dear readers: I've decided to turn it off on Postcards from Hell's Kitchen...

Instead, Comment Moderation is now enabled... So that means when you comment, instead of it appearing right away, it will wait for me to approve it in a queue. And I'll endeavor to approve them a couple times a day...

I don't recall ever deleting a comment due to content... Unless it's a Spammer... Hate spamments!

Some people use BOTH word verif AND comment moderation which seems incredibly redundant to me... But, hey....

Wish I didn't need either one...

But we have ALL have been hit by those damned Spammenters from time to time so we gotta do sumpin!

Meanwhile, I can't even figure out why I can no longer leave comments on my friend's Blogger blogs from my mobile device. It was a great past time when sipping tea or inhaling pizza...

Meanwhile, I'm probably still reading your blog while on the go... But, unfortunately, can't comment as often, til I'm home and on my desktop computer... Frustrating!

I suspect it's because Blogger is now using highfalutin Java or something?? Anyone have a clue? If so, please enlighten me in the Comments below. Thanks... I tried Googling the inquiry, but came up empty...

Then, there are blogs that are using some kind of a Comment widget that will simply NOT allow my info to be saved.... So it's soooo cumbersome to comment as I don't always have the time/energy to type in my name, email, and blog addy each and everytime I comment... There doesn't seem to be a block to check to save the identification info, and it's become a major pain... (Though it just occurred to me??? Is this because I'm using Google Chrome browser??? Maybe the form completion feature in the Google Toolbar on Firefox was making this chore easier??? Hm? I'll need to experiment with that)....

Also, if I'm a regular reader of YOUR blog, and vice versa, and you want to appear in my Blogroll in the right sidebar (and you don't already. Or if the link I put there is faulty), please mention it in your comment below and I'll add you...

I'd appreciate it if you put me in the Blog roll over on your site! I'm all for boosting traffic.

Blogger's Blogs I'm Following thing is a disaster as far as I'm concerned... The old-fashioned Blogroll is best!

Following works in Twitter... not in Blogger! I need to un-follow a couple of Blogs.... So don't take it personally if you notice I've un-followed you... I just can't stand all these posts clogging up my Dashboard....

And, I'm probably subscribing to you on BlogLines anyway... So fear not...

* Global warming, Disease, and Hunger would become the top world priorities.

* Mormon Churches would pay taxes.

* World peace would be permanent and lasting.

New Year's Eve Surf & Turf

Surf and Turf...Gotta say, I love this DeLonghi Perfecto Indoor Grill...

Many thanks to Danny and Lois for giving me this as a holiday gift...

Surf and Turf 2Last night, I used it for the very first time on a wonderful Omaha steak (Lois was right!)... And some grilled shrimps...

They all came out fantastic...

The grill heats up quickly... And has a non-stick surface... The glass lid allows you to keep an eye on what's going on without having to lift the lid and let the heat escape...

Cleaning is a breeze as it comes apart easily and is emminently and easily scrubbable...

Will use it again soon on the rest of the steaks, and some salmon, and some other frozen fish from Trader Joe's... Chicken cutlets, too?? Why not??

Oooh La La!
