Another Carrot Fully Consumed

Well, this place is DEFINITELY cleaner and better organized with these last nine days off... The Mid-Winter Break is especially good for staying in and getting things done... Christmas Break is too distracting with families and friends, and Spring Break is too... Well... Springy! Hard to stay in and get stuff done!

Tonight is Oscars. I'll DVR the whole nonsense and selectively view it later this week....

I may have seen one or two nominated films this year... LOL...

The best thing about the Red Carpet is Joan Rivers... LOL. I've been enjoying the Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best show on WE this winter...

Gotta get it in gear for a full month of work ahead... Seven full five day work weeks til the Spring Break...

These breaks are the carrots on the ends of the stick...

Out Of This World @ Fountain Gallery

Here's What I Think...

I THINK, therefore, I am....

I THINK Bill Clinton should be allowed to be President again... Remember when he left us with a balanced budget? (Saw Chris Matthews' special this week on the Billster!)

I THINK the attack on teachers across this country is reprehensible...!

I THINK the timing of Obama's DOMA Executive Order was a trap to get the Righties all squawkie about this issue while the government was on the precipice of budgetary shutdown... To make the Repubs look small and shrill... Looks like the Repubs haven't taken the bait... Not yet... (Except for the frothy mix guy, but he's on the sidelines). But... the Repubs know that when this makes it to the Supremes the deck is stacked in their favor...

I THINK the attack on unions is a right wing attempt to destroy the Democratic party (see Rachel Maddow's excellent coverage of that thesis!)

I THINK Charlie Sheen should go start a Charm School.

I THINK an Arab neighbor needs to conquer Libya and then liberate them...

I THINK Michelle Obama will some day be the nation's first female Vice President...

I THINK it's tragic the way the powers that be are ignoring climate change...

I THINK it's somewhat shocking that the USA is still so dependent on oil...

I THINK that's enough of my completely unsolicited, uninformed wild guess appraisal of the issues of the week!...

Munson Diner's Life After Hell's Kitchen

I've blogged over the years about the Munson Diner....

It used to be parked in Hell's Kitchen at 11th Avenue and 49th Street.

Somebody bought it and dragged it to the Catskills. Where it has failed in several reincarnations....

The latest news, according to the New York Times:

Still, the Munson’s allure endures. He’s out his life savings. The 15 original investors have spent more than $400,000. But Mr. Moore would love to figure out how to try again, and the businessmen are committed to making something work. One option is to find the right operator in Liberty, which, alas, has not turned into the new Hamptons. Another is to move the Munson yet again. One potential buyer, it turns out, has expressed preliminary interest in moving it back to New York City, this time to Park Slope, in Brooklyn, where, if all goes well, women in evening dress could swap jokes with men in overalls — presumably husbands or significant others — once again... It’s early, but stay tuned.

Comment on Comments

I lifted the word verification feature on comments and left on the comment moderation feature.... You should see ALL the spam that I'm getting. It's actually fun to see this crap.

Sometimes couched in grand word combinations that make no sense... Sometimes, a perfectly sterile looking remark but the person's name is actually a link to an advert... Foreign language ones. Some are sexy. Some not so much.

I gotta commend Blogger though, as they have caught them ALL and placed them in the Spam folder where I can easily glance and delete them...

I know from a reader's perspective that when I go to comment on friend's blogs, the word verification feature is tedious and frustrating...

And for those have both security features intact, I say... What are you afraid of?? Comment Verification alone is perfectly fine...

Blogger even reminds you from the dashboard that you have comments waiting to approve or deny...

I like it because I can be more aware of the reader's comments and also to see if it's a Blogger buddy it can remind me to swing by their place and look around and comment, too...

Now there are all those non-Blogger comment clients... And some work better than others... One friend uses one that I particularly despise... As it never recognizes me, and requires several stages of pull-down menus and passwords before I can log in to comment. He knows who he is... And he knows I do stop by his fishbowl and read much more than I actually comment...

And then there's a friend and blog reader who looked at this header and was horrified that it referred to something else. My comment to him?: Relaaaaaax...

Awareness Is An Answer

Made some Steel Cut Oats for breakfast for the first time ever!... MUCH more difficult than the standard Old Fashioned Oats in the microwave for four minutes... See this post.

But, as BMB pointed out... The flaky oats probably lack the same nutritional punch... That had never occurred to me before... Dr Oz is always touting oatmeal on the telly... And if you freeze frame the DVR and look carefully at his bin, it's always quietly marked "Steel Cut" oats...

Took 35 minutes to cook these babies... Dag! And the pot will need a good soak

Yesterday's paperwork mission was accomplished!

Well almost... Today, Thursday, is the run to Kinko's to xerox everything and the Post Office to stand in line to mail all these things... And THEN to pickup all the neatly sorted piles of receipts off the floor...

The floor is clearly the best place to organize tasks like this! Big pillow helps! Ralphie agrees!

Oh... And also on today's agenda: Some serious deep cleaning, and possible furniture re-configuration...

You gotta pull out the couch to clean behind and under it, so you might as well move it across the room to a new spot... LOL.

Here's a pointer to fellow bloggers (Newcomer Danny especially!): It's best to compose your Blogger blog posts when the posting window is on the "Edit HTML" tab... When you are in "Compose" tab the constant automatic system updates invariably interrupt what you are doing, and can add mysterious HTML instructions to the body of your post... So keep it on "Edit HTML" if you ask me... Put it on compose when you want to tweak your font sizes or re-size or drag/drop an image).

Oh and later: Gotta attend a monthly business meeting (at a non-profit) in the late afternoon... And will try *not* to pull out my hair... Or what little bit remains at this age... These business meetings are a complete challenge to my full inventory of personal defects... And I gots to be on my proverbial toes! Ahhh... Awareness can be a bear!

Big Guy / Little Things

I was so glad I got over to see Charles LeDray's WorkWorkWork at the Whitney before it closed...

Genius...

Such a big guy... So well endowed with a huge talent for making such little masterful intricate beautiful wonderful things...

Get It Done!

I plan to completely focus today and get a slew of long procrastinated tasks, chores and projects completed today....

So, then,  I can enjoy the next four remaining days of MidWinter Break withOUT having them hanging over my head...

Multi-tasking encouraged...

Let's get it done!

Enjoy your own Hump Day...!

Edward Hopper and His Time

Catching up with a museum visit from a couple weekends ago...

Edward Hopper and His Time is a great exhibit still running through April 10.

Edward Hopper is noted as one America's great realist painters of the early twentieth century.

If you want to see some of his iconic works, get over the Whitney Museum...

Grumpy, Sneezy, Doc, Bashful, Happy, Dopey, or Sleepy

Blogging is waning as the young drift to sites like Twitter, says Verne Kopytoff in the New York Times:

"While the younger generation is losing interest in blogging, people approaching middle age and older are sticking with it. Among 34-to-45-year-olds who use the Internet, the percentage who blog increased six points, to 16 percent, in 2010 from two years earlier, the Pew survey found. Blogging by 46-to-55-year-olds increased five percentage points, to 11 percent, while blogging among 65-to-73-year-olds rose two percentage points, to 8 percent..."

""The effect is seen on the companies providing the blogging platforms. Blogger, owned by Google, had fewer unique visitors in the United States in December than it had a year earlier — a 2 percent decline, to 58.6 million — although globally, Blogger’s unique visitors rose 9 percent, to 323 million".

Ravensburger shatters a Guiness Record with the hugest puzzle ever... And it's a giant puzzle of Keith Haring's art... If I had a wall 17' x 6', I might consider this as a wall covering. Although, I would never have the patience for 32,256 pieces! Yikes!

Have been thinking that asking the NFL to study Dave Duerson's brain for CTE is like asking Phillip Morris to uncover lung cancer... Or Jack Daniels to study liver disease

Did see Dreamgirls movie last night on the HD DVR. In keeping with the African American pop music history theme: Will watch Hairspray later or tomorrow... I saw them both when they opened in the theaters... And am always a fan of movie musicals... I wish Hugh Jackman would finally get it together for a cinematic Boy from Oz...

Also saw Snow White and Seven Dwarfs, the Disney musical classic of the animation kind...

All of this to brighten the midwinter blues...

Which Seven Dwarf are YOU most like today?

A Hell's Kitchen Pyramid?

The West 57th residential tower?

Me no like...

Looks more like a Las Vegas kinda thing...

I've never been a fan of architecture that doesn't respect the neighborhood...

I think this already looks dated and it hasn't even been started yet...

What do you think?

I Ate Justin Timberlake's Dry Rubs

Lunch today at Southern Hospitality... Justin Timberlake owns it. This is their new West side location. Corner of 45th and Ninth in Hell's Kitchen.

I had the Wet and Dry Combo...

Looks like all their ribs are done with the Memphis Dry Rub style... But the wet ones add a dash of wet bbq sauce to them...

They were tender, juicy, and delicious...

I love that the cole slaw was crisp, fresh, and zesty and was essentially mayonnaise-free... Might be totally mayo free... You certainly don't see any!

The collards (with ham hocks) were excellent... Though I coulda used a healthier portion on both sides for this price... (About $30)...

It was President's Day and the lunch crowd was jumping...

I think the waitress said this was only their third day open... But things were moving smoothly. Food came quick...

Waitress was efficient, well informed, and charmingly hospitable...

There are some quieter seating areas in the back, and the basement lounge is cozy and comfy... If I were still sipping tequila, I'd go down there to do it...

Justin Timberlake is a co-owner.

Easy Like Sunday Morning

At the moment: 25.0 °F, Feels Like 15 °F, Clear

Remind me to to try a Grandma's Slice at Sacco's next time I go. They advertise that it's available... So, why not give it a try?

I did try the Macaroni and Cheese slice at the new Uncle Mario's Brick Oven Pizza. Quite nice, although I'm not a huge Mac and Cheese fan. I would add crunchy browned bread crumbs on the top for character and crunch, if they ever asked me what I thought...

Uncle Mario's Hell's Kitchen slice... With chicken chunks and their hot sauce and chunks of crumbled blue cheese in a groovy Buffalo Chicken flavored salute. It's terrific! I'll be back for that one. In fact, I'll prolly get the personal pie for $9 and make a meal of it... And will try to remember to photograph it before I woof it down... Not always easy to do when you're hungry! LOL. (739 9th Ave, New York 10019 At 50th St; Phone: (212) 459-1234).

I won the lottery two weeks in a row!! One whole dollar winning each week!... (Not exactly what I had in mind!)...

Nice to see The New York Times printed a correction today that Mary Cleere Haran's cabaret debut was at Don't Tell Mama, and not The Ballroom as the obituary writer had originally stated. (Now the main obituary for Mary Cleere Haran online is corrected also).

Dr Oz calls them brain food. OK... So I just ate a slew of fresh blueberries on my oatmeal this morning... With walnuts, raisins, cinnamon, and a dribble of sugar-free syrup...

Having a followup blood test tomorrow to see if I got the cholesterol back into the safety range without the meds... I hate meds... I never trust meds.

I learned something yesterday... I read more carefully in the evening than I do in the morning... The morning means I rifle through the NYTimes to get it done. In the evening, a combination of tiredness and improved concentration, I read entire articles...

Setting the DVR for a Saturday Night Live backstage tour on NBC at 9pm tonight...

I have a friend who emailed this morning that he "just realized" his unemployment payments have run out and he's "in a panic". Funnily enough , he emailed me three weeks ago, that his unemployment was gonna run out in three weeks... So, now he sez he might (finally get around to) go to McDonald's to find a minimum wage job... Who knows?? He might actually give up drinking, too?... He is known to go to AA meetings to share his 30+ day sobriety count even though he was slipping the day before, and on the way to the meeting... In other words, his unemployment running out might/could be the best thing that ever happened to him...? ...If he let's it... Ya know? I hope so...

10:15 am and the morning is already flying by... Wow...

President of the World

My DVR is already set for this documentary airing on Monday...

Is yours?...

“PRESIDENT OF THE WORLD: THE BILL CLINTON PHENOMENON” - CHRIS MATTHEWS DISCUSSES PRESIDENT CLINTON’S POST-PRESIDENTIAL LIFE AND LEGACY
AIRING PRESIDENTS’ DAY: MONDAY, FEBRUARY 21 AT 10 PM ET/PT ON MSNBC

There’s not a single political figure today with the global reach and influence of Bill Clinton—a former U.S. President turned humanitarian and diplomat extraordinaire. No one else in today’s political arena has the ability to command the attention of world leaders and organizations everywhere quite like he does. This Presidents’ Day, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews will take viewers behind the scenes of Clinton’s life in the one-hour documentary “President of the World: The Bill Clinton Phenomenon.” The special will air Monday, February 21, at 10 pm ET/PT.

Since President Clinton left office in January 2001, he’s taken on a new and very successful role as an international humanitarian—his Clinton Global Initiative, Clinton Health Access Initiative, the William J. Clinton Foundation and countless other worthy efforts have made him a hero to peoples across the globe. Clinton’s innate talent for diplomacy gained him international recognition in 2009 when he aided in the release of two imprisoned American journalists from North Korea. In the last year alone, he’s provided invaluable political support to President Obama, hitting the campaign trail for countless Democratic candidates leading up to the November 2010 midterm elections.

In “President of the World: The Bill Clinton Phenomenon,” “Hardball” host Chris Matthews managed to spend a whirlwind week with Bill Clinton—hopping from the Clinton Global Initiative in New York City to Ireland, where Matthews sat down for a one-on-one interview with the former president. In addition, the hour includes intimate interviews with many of Clinton’s close friends and colleagues, including Tony Blair, Terry McAuliffe, John Podesta, Mary Steenburgen and Kevin Spacey.

“President of the World: The Bill Clinton Phenomenon” is an MSNBC original production and was produced for MSNBC by Peacock Productions. For Peacock Productions, Keith McKay is Executive Producer and Kate Hampson is Producer. Benjamin Ringe and Knute Walker are Co-Executive Producers of Peacock Productions. Sharon Scott is Executive-in-Charge of Peacock Productions. For MSNBC, Mike Rubin is Vice President, Long Form Programming. Scott Hooker is Senior Executive Producer, MSNBC. Timothy Smith is Senior Producer, MSNBC.

Stolen Kisses

First day off of the Mid-Winter Recess...

Been running around all morning with errands... Including that haircut from Peggy, dropping the laundry for fluff and fold... And getting those blood oranges, and sugar free Maple syrup I'd been thinking about...

I gotta get a lot of paperwork together this week... Taxes... An expense account at work... And it would be good if I finally mastered Evernote... Something I've been meaning to do for months (and months)(and months)...

Danny introduced me, by email to Wilbur's Chocolate Buds. Who knew that Hershey's stole the kiss...? Postal Lady recalls the original... Fancy that? You can actually read the legal briefs filed for and against “Kiss” on the U.S. Patents and Trademarks website. From “Trademark Document Retrieval,” enter the registration number 2416701. Choose the document dated 24-Feb-2009 called “Unclassified.” From “Trademark Document Retrieval,” enter the registration number 2416701. Choose the document dated 24-Feb-2009 called “Unclassified.” Anybody else recall the Wilbur's Bud? I like the idea of the molded bottoms...

This place needs a deep clean. Any volunteers?

Hell's Kitchen neighbor Sutton Foster is in rehearsal for a Broadway revival of Anything Goes. Here's some great footage from Bradshaw Smith's Broadway Beat, on BroadwayWorld. Here's the official site if you wanna buy tickets. March 10th to July 31.

Thought I'd catch up on movies this week too... But really, can't think of anything I want to see... But, maybe... Maybe The King's Speech?? It's at the Ziegfeld...

Some people are completely shocked that Borders is closing so many stores... Frankly, I don't know how brick and mortar book stores have survived as long as they have. The B&N at 82nd and Broadway is filled with UWS mothers and nannies reading books on the floor of the Children's Department... They put the slobbered on books right back on the shelf and wheel their strollers to the exit without getting anywhere near a cash register... Perhaps, these places should charge an admission charge??? Seriously! Borders' Park Avenue store is having a fire sales starting today...

I'll get over to The Petition Site this week and sign a slew... Like get everyone talking about climate change. I keep a separate email account on Care2.com just for activism. That way all that mail goes there and I check it every once in a while. I can be active without having my in-box jammed. I have found all these legitimate activist organizations are perfectly respectful of your email preferences. You just need to be careful when you sign petitions to un-check the block that you want to get their mailings. You can also opt to be Anonymous... Which makes your petitions unsearchable on the Internet.

Homeless guy on the corner. People give him money. Today, I see him sipping from a liquor bottle in the phone booth. Sad. But, personally, I refuse to subsidize his liquor addiction. I just won't. When I see a new homeless person hanging around in the neighborhood, I often stop and tell them the local churches and centers around where they can go for free breakfasts and lunches... That's more my style. And sometimes I give them food...

Decided that e-Magazines are far enough off that I resubscribed to New York Magazine today... Paper... The old fashioned way...

... Just like those old fashioned Wilbur Buds from Wilbur's Chocolatiers... Today, the only Bud prominent in American pop culture is the beer... Not sure which Bud would be more addictive or would make you fatter...

You can order a 5lb box of Wilbur Buds and decide for yourself!! LOL. Not me... I'm on a diet...

Magicians Don't Exist

I saw The Illusionist at The Paris* theater over the weekend...

The animation was sweetly executed...

Quite depressing if you are, or ever were, a novelty act...

... Especially the part where the ventriloquist becomes a drunken bum, and his dummy can't even be given away at the local pawn shop...

* The 586-seat Paris theater is one of the oldest art houses in the United States. According to The New York Times.

Sunday Quicktakes from HK

Just back from a morning walk and errands... Now, just finished a list of some more things I need to do this morning... A typical weekend morning for me means a lot of mucho activity... Followed by a hearty (though not necessarily heart-healthy) lunch, then a nap and a mellower afternoon...

Thanks to CoffeeDog for the valentine! When are you and Sheila gonna get up here so I can take you to MoMA?

The pic at left shows there are, indeed, remaining snow piles along the Hell's Kitchen walkways and byways... And it also shows that some Zen Master with a sense of humor knows what to do with stickers on a door of the abandoned and decaying St Clare's Hospital... Nice job, Grasshopper...

I belong to a gay hiking group. They did a hike that woulda been perfect for me... Up the Hudson River coast yesterday from 59th to Harlem and beyond... But, alas, I forgot it was yesterday and besides: I had too many other things I needed/wanted/had to do on my Saturday off.

Weekends are like that... There just isn't enough time on the weekends to do everything... To squeeze in all the relaxing and recharging that needs to be done too...

Did four museum exhibitions and a film yesterday... That puts me well ahead on the New Year's Resolution regarding cultural things. LOL... Also took a slew of new mannequin and reflection pictures along Madison Avenue (mostly)... They are on my Flickr page... Here's my mannequin set on there.

Toy Fair starts today... I don't know if I'll even bother...

Got to the gym today and weighed myself. 194! That's heavy...

Need to see if Stiles Market (on west 52nd) still has those fabulous jumbo peanuts and now Lady Donothing has me craving fresh radishes... I need some fresh sweet potatoes too. And lately, they have had a regular supply of fresh blue berries. Good brain food.

Starting my annual list of activities and projects for the Mid Winter Break that happens the week after next... Some of those things, let's face it, are the same things that were unfinished from last summer vacation's list... Or even the one before that... Oy vey.

This recent upheaval in Egypt really IS a huge world event... I hope it all goes well for world peace and stability... No doubt Postal Lady and I will discover that the topic dominates the Sunday morning talks... I've been to Egypt. And frankly always wondered how long the poor would be able to take it... Pray for peace!!

Have a great Sunday, peeps...

MoMA: Picasso Guitars

Finally starting to play catch up with my New Year's resolution regarding cultural events...

For the first time, I took advantage of the member privilege of getting into MoMA an hour before opening to see an exhibit in preview...

The guitar sculptures that are getting the most press attention, are the least of it...

As a fan of collage and assemblage art, I was most attracted to those kinds of works, such as Guitar, Sheet Music, Glass

The best workday of them all...

And the best after-work day of them all!

Clarence Thomas: Recuse Yourself

Tell Clarence Thomas: Recuse yourself. http://bit.ly/etzZOn

A case challenging the constitutionality of the health care reform bill passed by Congress is headed to the Supreme Court, and Justice Clarence Thomas has a supreme ethical conflict.

It's been widely reported that the Thomas family has financial ties to the conservative organizations leading the campaign to bring down our new health care law -- the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Rep. Anthony Weiner and 73 other members of Congress have signed a letter detailing the appearance of ethical conflict and asking Justice Thomas to recuse himself from deliberations on the constitutionality of health care reform.

You can sign it here.

A-O-Hell!!!

AOL is buying Huffington Post??

Seven ways meditation can save your life...  is just the kind of Huffington Post article that will fit nicely on an AOL welcome page...

How Al Gore wooed Keith Olbermann to Current TV is exactly the kind of article that Huffington Post will not be able to merge with AOL... Though this particular article happens to be a very excellent idea of an appropriate media merger...

This AOL/HuffPo combo idea is stupid!! And it will tank...!

You can mark my words...

Facebook Grows

Am reading in AMNY at lunch that, in 2010, an average of 7.9 people signed up for new Facebook accounts every second.

I personally know of 7.9 who did not: Nicomar, Postal Lady, Deanna, my parents, SMyles, MikeLaw, and JimmyMac.

... At least not yet anyway!

Rest in Peace: Mary Cleere Haran

Here is the New York Times obituary for Mary Cleere Haran...

She was struck in the side, while on her bicycle, by a car leaving a parking lot, after leaving her resume' at a local Florida hotel. She never regained consciousness.

Stephen Holden, one of her greatest champions, called her "A singer of remarkable purity whose simple unaffected pop-jazz style echoed big band singers of the 1940s, most notably Ella Fitzgerald"

Rex Reed commented on her last New York cabaret run in Fall 2009: "There’s honeysuckle in the air when she croons “Moon River,” and with a voice shimmering and polished as Sunday night silverware..."

I remember when she appeared at Gregory Dawson's The Ballroom in 1988 which Mr Holden reports to have been "her Manhattan cabaret debut in 1988". She and I appeared on many of the same benefits and award shows during the late 1980's and 1990's...

Haran was taking a restorative hiatus from show business in Florida. She was only 58.

Great Day in the Mornin'!

Where did that expression come from??? I used to hear it on the CB radio in the seventies all the time... Usually with gusto. It might look like this in 2011 text-speak: Man E Dayz... Gr8 day in da mornin!

Happy Saturday, people!... We just had another winter weather event earlier... A little sleet or something. I paid it no mind and the temps rose so high that it's no longer an event... Ta ta event! But I DO still hear the pitter-pat of raindrops on the air-conditioner...

Another perfect day to stay in pajamas with scented candles working their magic...!

Cool new website called DNAinfo. Great local NYC information... I hate the name of the site though... Sounds like a competitor for the quite wonderful 23andMe genome identification service.

So Jeffrey Koons can't copyright the generic balloon animal after all? Justice is served!

Meanwhile, there's a balloon artist that looks the illegitimate offspring of Jim Henson and Allyn Gooen: HolyKaw

I love Reta Shaw

... Caught her on a sixties re-run the other day of I Dream of Jeannie... She was always a show stopper... Still is!

Remember her?? Tough old broad with a heart... If I were a lesbian she would have been my idol...

If you want to visit her these days you have to visit Forest Lawn.

Let's see... What else can I tell you??? All Night With Joey Reynolds is a mess.... But there is something cool about it. Reminiscent of the early days of television variety programs... Still, when they give star billing on website and opening credits to a beloved NYC entertainer and then they don't even let him perform (Just sit on a panel and occasionally nod) it leaves the viewer feeling short changed... Meanwhile: New York Non Stop is quite worth watching , or DVR-ing as the case may be...

Slippery When Icy

Time for the weekly midwinter storm... We've been in quite a weather pattern lately...

This one promises more of the wintry mix of precipitation...

And the key will be to get around without slipping on the ice...

Promises to be a two day event...

The best advice is to just stay home for two days. That would be my first choice.

It's already the start of the mess out there...

And it's just getting started in these early morning hours...

Please be careful, people...!
