NewFest 2011: Rent Boys, Sick Comedy and a Slick Biopic

As longtime readers of Postcards from Hell's Kitchen readers will recall... Summer vacation for me means the opportunity to engage in all kinds of New Yorky people, places, and things that I'd never have the time (or residue energy) to enjoy during the regular work year...

And so it was with last week's NewFest film festival...

This year's fest seemed well run from my perspective... Even the occasional broken air conditioner, ticket order mix ups, impromptu Director Q&A's, and delayed film start times, were all handled smoothly and professionally by cheery NewFest staffers...

NewFest is dedicated to bringing together filmmakers and audiences in the building of a community that passionately supports giving greater visibility and voice to a wide range of expressions and representations of the LGBT experience. We are committed to nurturing emerging LGBT and allied filmmakers. We support those artists who are willing to take risks in telling the stories that fully reflect the diversity and complexity of our lives. And we’re committed to bringing our audience stories that transform our vision of who we are and who we can be.

Through the New York LGBT film festival, presented annually since 1988, and year-round programming, NewFest celebrates fine domestic and international film as part of our mission to break through closet doors and glass ceilings everywhere.

The German documentary Rent Boys Die Jungs vom Bahnhof Zoo tackled the compelling world of male prostitution in Berlin without falling into cliche' by focussing on the psychology and sociology without the prurient appeal... The story lines focused on the biographies of five rent boys including Ionel and visiting his home village in Romania. There was also Nazif, a former civil war refugee from Bosnia who came to Germany as a child and began working the Bahnhof Zoo train station as a hustler.

The film’s main protagonist is Daniel (Pictured), who began working as a male prostitute at sixteen. He longs for a simple post-prostitution career with a simple job, raising his son, and a simple life with his female partner.

I saw a nonsense movie called Varla Jean and the Mushroomheads which was totally not my cup of tea. Interesting premise of twisted drag queen tries to alter her narcissistic career into a TV kid's show... But I draw the line at references to pedophilia (later recounted to depict that the suspect was only guilty feeding kids illegal prescription drugs... Meh). Film lacked so much of the John Water's aesthetic that it tried desperately to achieve. That's one I HIGHLY UNrecommend!

I also caught that terrific bio documentary on Carol Channing. Follow that link to my review of Carol Channing: Larger Than Life that I had published last week...

Kudos to all involved with NewFest. Here's a list of 2011 NewFest Awards.

Of course all who were able to widen their audience base with their film work were winners... The good, the bad and the ugly...

Last Saturday in July 2011

It's the last Saturday in July 2011... Time flies when you're having fun. And summer vacation provides many opportunities for fun. This is another day where I have no plans... But will let the day unfold on it's own...

Supposed to be hot but with very low humidity. The TV weather person yesterday remarked the next two days will feel like a sauna... The following two days like a steambath... Temps are expected to be in the 90's for all but the humidity will gradually increase...

Was glad to read the upbeat piece in New York Magazine about the resurgence of the New York Times business model. I am not as optimistic about the success rate of their electronic subscription models which are off to a better than expected launch... Am hopeful. But remain unconvinced that it's all good news for old fashioned American journalism...

At Starbucks at 6am... Listening to some folksy music they have piped in and sipping my iced venti half caff...

Just tried to post from the new Android Blogger app. It was already a draft and unfortunately it published with the date that it was initially conceived instead of today... which is what I wanted. Couldn't find that setting anywhere... I'll have to fix it when I get to the desktop...

Also in New York Magazine this week was a simple and important piece on the sad regentrification of a favorite Upper West Side block on Broadway... It's a telling piece on a very serious trend that promises to destroy the entire fabric of so many New York City neighborhoods...

Bigger is rarely better around here...

OK... I want to test this Android app... So will publish now and hyperlink later...
Have a good Saturday, everyone! Whether you are in a sauna, steamroom, a fridge or a freezer... (I know I would prefer the latter for myself)....
Cheers.

Meet My Friend: Michael Orland

Michael Orland...

Swell guy... Always was...

This is a great interview of Michael Orland. No doubt you have caught his work somewhere or other over the decades since we were both performing in the same little cabaret nightclub in 1985 or so... Haven't seen Michael in years, though Facebook has helped keep in touch with so many ol' show biz friends...

MoMA's P.S. 1 Summer 2011 is Not for Everyone

Scooted over to MoMA's PS 1 today to see what they have going for the summer...

The most striking addition? The cheery young red shirt young people were scattered throughout and were happy to discuss art with the patrons. This seems like a promising new program....

However... I was completely disappointed and unfulfilled by the curation choices which were heavy on multi-media and conceptual showings.

I think it's nice that they attempt to showcase young new artists... I do.

But I prefer a wider range of artistic voices and more choices for the viewer to admire...

This stuff all seemed pretentious and obtuse to me...

In other words, showcase MORE young artists, all at once, instead of these artsy installations that take up entire rooms or floors with tv screens or a single minute piece of art...

Nothing really spoke to me with the exception except of one show by Nancy Grossman:

"Nancy Grossman: Heads"... On view until August 15, 2011.

"Nancy Grossman has been making art for more than fifty years and is best known for her leather-wrapped sculptures of heads, which the artist made from the late 1960s through to the 1980s. This exhibition brings together fourteen sculptures, highlighting the formal and expressive range within the series.

While Grossman regularly refers to the heads as self-portraits, they are not made to resemble the artist herself."

Unfortunately, that single exhibition is not worth the trip or the price of admission alone...

Even the new too low, rock like seating in the cafe has been made uncomfortable and ineffective...

This entire MoMA annex desperately needs a new vision and leadership in order to thrive and to engage the museum visitor...

Right now, it's all just a mess...

The President Has Asked Me to Tweet

Today, President Obama asked Americans to voice their views about all this debt mess in emails, phone calls, faxes and on Twitter...

Here's my three civic tweets of the day:

1. POTUS asked me to tweet. So here goes:.. REPUBLICANS SUCK! They're financial policies are only proven to be DISASTROUS time & time again...

2. I SUPPORT a balanced approach to tackling US deficit incl VERY strong revenue increases on wealthy & corps... !

3. I think Obama is waaay too diplomatic w/ the selfish greed driven corporately controlled Congress Republicans!

So there...

Here's more fun on my Twitter profile.

Did You Hear the One About the Mockingbird and the Tall Guy?

034Tomorrow marks one complete month since the start of the summer vacation on June 28th. As usual, the time is FLYING by soooo fast!...

This past month seems to have gone by as quickly as a typical Monday through Friday slogs along in a regular work week... Can someone please explain this time dimension continuum thingie to me and how to beat it?? This MUST be fixed!

Meanwhile, there's a tall guy with a goatee standing out on a paved walkway at the Hudson River Park this morning soaking up his his Vitamin D from the brilliant sunshine. Suddenly, a mockingbird dive-bombs his head. Ouch!... Yes that was me, you damned bird!

Hell's Kitchen ParkHad breakfast in the Hell's Kitchen Park this morning, where some shrewd old people fix the gate so it looks like the park is still locked... And you have to know that it's open to lift the doohickey to open the gate... Made for a quiet breakfast and the reading of The New York Times...

Had made a little picnic breakfast at Lenny's on Ninth Avenue to bring along...

020The Clinton Community Garden was very late in being unchained this morning (by whatever volunteer does it every morning)... So I passed by after breakfast to use my member key after the chain was remand take some photos inside for my Clinton Community Garden Flickr Group...

Damn, that's a lot of activity in Hell's Kitchen area parks for one tall guy with a goatee blogger for one day...

BTW, that damned mockingbird came back and made a second pass before I left that Hudson River Park just before lunch...

Obviously, it was a personal vendetta... because here I thought I was well away from any shrubbery where there might have been a nest...

So, watch out, there, little Mockingbird bird beast...

I'll be back...!

... With a hat next time...

I'm no Tippi Hedren...

Goddamned bird!

Rainy Afternoon In the Villages East to West

Much cooler than the last few days, but with the awful 96% humidity... It was still miserable. Especially in the subways... Summers in the subway are a reminder of what life is probably like in hell...

Nevertheless, I hopped the N train for a visit to Union Square.

Berry Rhubarb Pie Ala ModeDecided to wander way East to Avenue A for another visit to Westville for their vegan hot dogs. Had the sauteed kale instead of French Fries... And then they had Berry Rhubarb Pie ala mode on the Specials menu so I had that with an iced coffee... Perfect...

Still had some time before my NewFest screening, so I texted Lisa to remind me of the name of a shop nearby that sold some unusual colognes... She responded with Odin on East 11th. And I grabbed a bottle of Wonderwood...

Obscura Shooting OdditiesTried to finally get to visit the Obscura shop... But they were busy filming another episode of Oddities... So I couldn't get near the place with all the film equipment and texting crew blocking the entrance... Maybe another time... (I hope!)

Admired the architecture on the side streets as I walked westward for the NewFest screening at Village East Cinema...

021Hated this film today, though. Haven't decided if I'll blog a review or not... See how I feel in a day or so...

Wandered past the Salamagundi Club, but it was too late to visit their gallery which closed at 6pm. I know I would've enjoyed the Max Ginsberg Retrospective show there. And City Life. Both shows are there til August 5...

So, maybe I'll get myself back down that way before they close...

The Carol Channing Documentary

I'll be seeing several of the screenings at this year's NewFest: New York's premier LGBT film festival...

And, I completely loved this bio-pic documentary GEM... (And I don't mean rhinestones)... Carol Channing: Larger Than Life...

Often funny. Always touching. Highly entertaining...

There's plenty here for the Broadway historian including antique footage and priceless recollections from composers, producers, colleagues, and friends from Lend an Ear to Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, through the whole Hello, Dolly! phenomenon and more...

The footage of our almost 90 year old Broadway legend strolling through Shubert Alley while sharing her recollections was already worth the price of admission (and/or the price of the someday released DVD. Collectors will note!)... And that's just the beginning of the film...

Press Release: "The story of legendary performer Carol Channing's life is as colorful as the lipstick on her big, bright smile. In CAROL CHANNING: LARGER THAN LIFE, director Dori Berinstein (ShowBusiness, Gotta Dance), with co-writer Adam Zucker, captures the magic and vivacity of the 90-year-old icon – both onstage and off... past and present. The film is both an intimate love story and a rarefied journey inside Broadway's most glamorous era. It is, above all, a look at an inspiring, incomparable and always entertaining American legend."

Her entire career and 90 year life seem to fly by in a blink... An extremely well-lashed and wide-eyed blink at that...

Here's the complete cast list for Carol Channing: Larger than Life at IMDb.

Here's a link to the Trailer for Carol Channing: Larger Than Life

Pictured at right is a shot of  Miss Channing with her treasured original Dolly head dress that she pulled out of her closet for the documentary...

God bless her... At 90... She's still glowin', she's still crowin', she's still goin' strong...

Batton Down the Hatches

Batton down the hatches... It's been a VERY hot coupla days here in Hell's Kitchen...

...According to Weather Underground's Hell's Kitchen and Vicinity Forecast:

It's currently 103 °F, Feels Like 112 °F.

And it's only 2pm so it could get worse!

Pray for the strength of the power grid during these trying times!

I know I am!

Another One Bites the Dust: Borders Bookstores

Got this in my email this morning...

Another sign of the changing times... Borders Bookstores are going out of business.

The era of the brick and mortar bookstore comes to an ever closer end...

This announcement was waaay too soon after the close of the wonderful Barnes and Noble at Lincoln Center... Home to so many book signings and live performance CD release parties...

Also note... this shutdown takes down the longstanding Waldenbooks chain as well...

This Fifty-Something Dude Exclaims: "Google and Twitter and Facebook , Oh My!"

As a fifty something dude (can I still be called a dude?), I enjoy more than my fair share of Social Media...

So a coupla friends have now "invited" me to Google+. I've not yet accepted their thoughtful invitations. Can anyone explain to me the advantages? I mean I have Facebook and Twitter and this here Blogger blog.

I do see the value of setting up Google+ "Circles" to disseminate info, thoughts, clips, links, photos etc to like minded folks through email... BUT, those particular friends of mine are stubbornly addicted to their AOL, optonline, Roadrunner, Hotmail, Lycos, Yahoo or Compuserve accounts and have refused my persuasiveness to get a Gmail account in the first place, let alone Google+. (Anyone know if I can put these folks into a Google+ circle with their non-Gmail addys??)

I know I'll never be one for Google+ "Video Hangouts" or "Huddles" tied into my Android phone... I can't even bear old fashioned "Instant Messaging" and have defaults set to "Invisible" on ALL my social media...

And I participate in quite a few social media experiences... Pretty good for someone in the 50+ demographic.

Seriously... Somebody, besides David Pogue who raved about it, in this NYTimes review tell me *why* I should sign up and learn the new Google+ platform?

Grateful to learn this morning, however, that Google Labs shutdown won't mean I'll lose the Gmail features that I love... Yesterday's tweets were looking quite ominous about Google labs announcement of Lab closing...

Speaking of tweets... As usual, I have been short tweeting MUCH more than I have been long blogging and the newly re-decorated my Twitter Profile actually reveals more of my summer vacation doings...

Interesting, that while I was able to redo my Twitter profile page layout yesterday, Twitter wouldn't let me update my icon... Silly.

My main beef with Twitter, however, is that they disappear the user's posts. Perhaps, I'd like to search back among my 12,177 tweets to see what I did on this particularly summer day in history on each of the last few previous years? Greedily, they don't make those tweets available. Poof! They're gone! That sucks! (Does a solution exist that I am unaware of?)

I really like Facebook. I do...

But, it IS a lot of work to carefully set it up so that you are in control of all your personal information. Newbies make the mistake of signing up for embarrassing apps that compromise their personal address books, send stupid updates to all their Facebook friends, and so often they post something that winds up being public that that they thought was private... And the list goes on and on...

Facebook is NOT low maintenance... And it DOES require a learning curve...

That being said... I've mastered it over the years, doing a couple settings posts, tweaks (like turning off Instant Messaging) and FAQ's at a time... And I love it...

But I need to just let go that some of my friends, family, and colleagues of all ages are never gonna be up for the challenge of learning a new platform, no matter how intuitive that it may be...

It's too bad, because their fear, is keeping them from participating in one big party...

Ah well... One of the life skills that comes a bit easier after 50: "Live and let live"...

Kevin Keller is No Wendel!

Isn't it Bromantic?

Archie Comics will spin off Archie's gay pal Kevin Keller into his own comic...

Is this merely a publicity stunt??

Or could such a thing be sustainable and actually make a profit...?

No doubt the opening issue will be a HUGE collector's item!!

More at New York Times' Gay Character Gets His Own Comic Book.

My duh prediction is that Kevin will never be another Wendel... (Created by my brilliant friend Howard Cruse)

His The Complete Wendel is on sale now... If you want to see a real gay comic character...

Says Howard, "Every episode of my Wendel comic strip series, which was regularly featured in The Advocate during the 1980s, will be waiting to be savored (or re-savored) in The Complete Wendel, along with a new introduction by Alison Bechdel and my newly-drawn orgy of cartooned speculation, "Where Are They Now?"

I wonder what comic icon Frank Miller thinks about all of this??

Next time I pass Frank outside on a Hell's Kitchen neighborhood street (he's a Hell's Kitchen neighbor), perhaps I'll ask him... LOL

Update: Wonder Man reported on the Gays in Comics Panel at Comic Con and reports that Kevin Keller comic will deal with issues such as Don't Ask Don't Tell and Gay Marriage.

The High Line: A New Perspective

012If you haven't visited The High Line yet... You're missing a really cool new park here in New York City...

Just below Hell's Kitchen is a long abandoned elevated rail line that was once used for freight transfer to area warehouses...

Some ingenious urban visionaries have managed to make it into something truly wonderful...

Frankly, I'm not crazy about the accelerated rate of luxurious gentrification to the once gritty area... New York still needs some grit...

067Jeremiah's Vanishing New York warns that it is driving out New York City's last remaining leather bar (The New York Eagle).

But on it's own merits... The High Line is beautiful and worth the trip...

My High Line Flickr Gallery is here. You gotta scroll down as the most recent shots, including the newly opened Phase Two are at the end of the stack...

Here's the Wikipedia article on The High Line.

Six to Six: A Packed Staycation Day

Yesterday in tweets... Slightly edited and now thoroughly cross linked and annotated... Remember to read them in reverse order if you want to make sense of the chronology...

If not, just look at the pictures and be done with it!! LOL...

0566:30 pm Now to Museum of Arts & Design in Columbus Circle. Pay-as-you-wish night til 9pm.

Stopped at Hells' Kitchen branch of Housing Works. She bought a red vest, Me: a grey striped shirt. 5 bucks!

Joee surprised with a visit to town. We noshed & caught up. Then we headed to the Ninth Avenue Saloon for a soda. Saw Marc, Jay R, Sergio and, of course, Joe.

4:30pm Had a vegetable burrito at El Centro. Quite good!

Grom Gelato3:30pm Now at that Grom that I just discovered this AM in Columbus Circle for a mixed cup of Milk & Mint and Chocolate Extraordinaire. FABulous!

Boxer Brief sale at JCrew at Time-Warner Center. Had a giftcard I found on the sidewalk. So two pair cost me $2 and change total. Amazing!

3 pm Just passed a flock of Little Beavers going to YMCA pool with their counselors. That was my 1st job as a teen. I hired my friend Brian, too.

Perfectly lovely day for a homeward bound afternoon stroll down Central Park West. Take my word for it...

Taking a sunny break on an open grassy area on an open lawn just above the Swedish Cottage in Central Park.

The Ramble, Central Park1pm Happened upon The Ramble. Wonder if I'll see any wildlife in here? Hm... Let's try this path here...

T-Mobile's 4G Download speed on Speedtest.net Android app in front Met Museum, NYC is mere 1.10 mbps. I thought 4G was supposed to kick ass?

12 Noon. Very (overly-)friendly fellow just gave me a Jews for Jesus brochure out front of the Met Museum. I'm unimpressed.

Your Postcards from Hell's Kitchen blogger has left the building

Lunch at Met MuseumVegetarian lunch @ Met's Cafeteria. Today's math lesson? Salad bar .76 per pound = $12.16 per lb. So $10 bucks of food = paltry portion LOL

Vitamin D Enrichment Therapy up on this here roof.

Metropolitan Museum of Art isn't too crowded yet this morning. But it picks up fast.

Met Roof Sculpture 01711 AM On the roof at The Met. Not the opera. Not the cabaret.

A colleague just jogged by. Gotta remember to Facebook that! We jointly pitied the "working class" in a brief exchange and tribute to our colleagues

Note to Self: There is a Grom in Columbus Circle! Oh-My-God!

Perfect morning for a walk in the (Central) Park!

6:30AM A delightfully chilly and crystal clear Thurz morn in Hell's Kitchen. Devoured coffee & NY Times outside Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

Random Thoughts on Blogging and Bloggers

Best Blogging Advice you were ever given? Here's a few answers on Blogger Buzz:

~“Write to build community; link to others and participate in the conversation”
~“To blog consistently, respond to comments, and to read and comment on other people's blogs (especially those who read mine).”
~“To not only be active within your own blog but on others' as well - leave comments, but don't spam!”

DB Echo sez it best with his What I've learned so far: Advice for beginning bloggers ...

Amazing to me how many people blog their own minds but have no interest in others. Then, they wonder why no one is reading their blogs... So silly.

Even the hugely successful Joe.My.God... His whole blog is a public service providing links and readers to others... With love...

Taking a page from Greg... Here's some additional Random Thoughts of my own...

Palm Springs blogger Steven Michael wrote a nice plug for Postcards from Hell's Kitchen yesterday... "where us West Coasters can live vicariously through these pages of Manhattan Madness and Pop Culture Clashing... I found myself running late for work as I dove into the rest of the blog’s offerings. I’m bookmarking the page and encourage you to do the same." Needless to say, I've added iamstevenmichael to my blog list at right and will be stopping by over at his place...

DB Echo got me thinking, how glad I am that I pretty much completely ignored every detail of the Casey Anthony stuff...

Alan's blog titled No Good Deed Goes Unpunished reminds me that I want to re-read "Co-Dependent No More" this summer.

Gratitude for Dave's ongoing inspiration...

And Ralph Marston's great quotes:

A very important person is watching your every action, listening to your every word, and knows your every thought. That person is you... Imagine yourself a year from now, looking back on today. Imagine your future self being exceedingly thankful for the way you lived this day. ...Then step forward and live today with that in mind. Think, speak and act in such a way that the person you will become inherits many positive benefits from the person you are right now....Confidence, integrity, strength and effectiveness do not simply appear out of nowhere. They are built by the way you live your life... And now is your opportunity to live in a powerful, positive way that will benefit your life for a long time to come. Now is your chance to make your future self thankful for the empowering paths you choose to take. -- Ralph Marston

Sunrise Sunset

078This is a photo of the fabulous sunset on my birthday this year...

Don't even ask how many birthday sunsets there have actually been...

Too damned many to count!

The other shots are also from Cherry Grove, on Fire Island where I had a great time...

It was my first trip out there in many years. In fact, I was about half the age that i am now when I was last out there... Sheesh... So the whole trip had a Twilight Zone feel...

Some favorite moments? The birthday sunset on the marina, new friends, seeing the beautiful new John Scoullar Memorial Garden, hiking the trails, watching a helicopter practice landing on the waves, looking for shells and beach glass, long shore walks with an old friend, lightning bugs, watching a sheltie outrun the crashing surf, breakfasts with new friend's Chris and Tommy at Floyd's, long naps in the Broadway Baby pod, gorgeous weather, floating in the pool at the Manor, free pizza at the Ice Palace, and running into Sundancer Peter at Cherry's.

Here's my Fire island Flickr album!

Many thanks to Bradshaw for the whole trip!!

Typical Hell's Kitchen Architecture

086Keith wrote on my Flickr page: "Love the architecture of this building."

So I responded:

Yes, Keith, I do too... That is a fairly perfect example of the original Hell's Kitchen building style...

They are being destroyed at an alarming rate due to a couple recent Republican mayors who weakened all the protection laws...

In fact this one stands alone next to a freaking McDonald's and parking lot... Jeezus!

It is a handsome structure, indeed!!! And I'm so glad to see it's so well cared for...

It's at 32nd (or is it 33rd?) and Tenth Avenue... (Technically it's just below the 34th Street Hell's Kitchen line and is a Chelsea building actually...)

Anyway... It's near The High Line and you can't miss it if you walk back to Hell's Kitchen from down there Northward along Tenth Avenue...

Broadway Barks 13

Bernadette Peters & Mary Tyler MooreWent to Broadway Barks 13 yesterday in Shubert Alley hosted by founders Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters...

More photos on my Flickr page of Bobby Cannavale, Sutton Foster, Joel Grey, John Larroquette, Mary Tyler Moore, Bernadette Peters, Reeve Carney of Spiderman and Andrew Rannells.

Beautiful day for it...

I fell in love with three little pooches. I hope they get adopted before I decide to do it...

Not sure I'm ready for the lifestyle changes required... But it is tempting, I gotta admit...

Saturday Stuff

Back from a great coupla days on Fire Island. Weather was perfect! Photos forthcoming...

Congrats to Derek Jeter on 3000th hit! a few minutes ago!

Meanwhile...

My new vegan-ish diet coming along nicely...

Been a few weeks without any meat... Have almost phased out seafood completely...

Next target is dairy... I think I've gained weight because I'd unconsciously stepped up the dairy lately... Am trying non-dairy alternatives starting yesterday with tofu sour cream and soy cheese on my Black Bean Burrito... from Burrito Box...

If Bill Clinton can go vegan, so can I!

I wonder if Dean and Deluca will have a non-dairy creamer option when I drop by for an iced coffee later? Won't hurt to ask...

Betty Ford: "There is joy in recovery," she wrote, "and in helping others discover that joy."

Amazing lady. Amazing life...

This summer it's TLC's NY Ink...

Happy 5th of July!

OK... It's my birthday...

No muss, no fuss...

But here's my quote of the year...

"You should strive to find happiness every day and not believe that it comes at the end of the journey."

Cheers!

Sunday in Reverse Ordered and Edited Tweets

Got stuck in the rain a coupla times today... It's ok. Makes you feel alive!

I now DVR "The New York Times Close Up" each week on NY1. Sam Roberts hosts an interesting program each week...

Sacco's pizza for dinner. The best pizza in Hell's Kitchen for the last 50 years (at 54th/9th).

Watching NY1 piece on Amma the Hug Healer. I know someone (Steven) who actually went to see her today. He was hugged. ... OK Dokey...

Tried Burrito Box in Hell's Kitchen for lunch. They offer a slew of healthful vegetarian options including brown rice and non dairy toppers.

Delighted to see Ben and Jerry's Peanut Butter Cup flavor again at local corner Korean Deli in Hell's Kitchen. Six bucks for a pint here tho. Ouch!

Eleanor Clift desperately tries to make her good points on The McLaughlin Group even though the panel is stacked against her weekly. Painful.

It's raining, it's pouring, my love life is... Oh, nevermind...

Pouring rain in Hell's Kitchen this AM. I'm drenched. Still have a ways to go to get home w/o umbrella! Sheesh.

Lenny's is unprofessional and unreliable with their opening times for breakfast. Sposed to be 8a. But they change it whenever they feel like it and without warning. Sort of disrespects and discourages a regular following. Interesting business model.

Starting to sprinkle in Hell's Kitchen, Times Square, and vicinity... 7am-ish

Chatted up a family from New Hampshire and took a group picture of them in Times Square. That was my tourist good deed for the decade... Bah

And an ambulance pierces the hum of the Hydro Tek machine blasting the street surface of the Broadway car-less mall...

Gotta say I'm groovin on these tacky Times Square tables and chairs this early AM and watching the Times Square lights. Hypnotic actually...

Remember when people used brooms to sweep? Those days are gone apparently...

Some worker at a 42nd Street storefront thinks the best way to sweep up flyers and leaflets is with a high powered hose of water. Not ideal!

Times Square @ 6:30am is very quiet ... Except for marauding gangs of cheap looking women in too tight clothes with drunk boyfriends in tow...

Room Service Thai Lunch

005Tried Hell's Kitchen's Room Service yesterday for the very first time. For lunch.

I'd walked by this location many times over the years and it was always full of folks in business attire... I always felt under-dressed.

I guess with the July 4th weekend so nigh, it was more casual...

So I ventured in...

Tried "Vegetable Spicy Basil" "Kee Mao" Noodle dish with the vegetable dumplings appetizer. I threw in a side salad for another $1.50. Food was fresh and tasty...

Dish was surprisingly full of tofu, so I think I confused the waitress when I ordered by asking about the difference between the Vegetable noodle dish and the Tofu one. She initially said the Vegetable one had no tofu and that's the one I ordered.

The giant flat Kee Mao noodles reminded me of Chow Fun... But I've learned that staff at Thai restaurants don't usually appreciate comparisons to Chinese food... LOL...

One of the businessmen dudes seated near me in casual Friday attire were eating cellophane noodles. I think I'd look for that one next time... I prefer my noodles firm not floppy like these broad noodles turned out... Although they were perfectly fine for the type of noodle they were. Just sayin...

Beautiful decor in there. They have a fabulous chandelier in an eye level plexiglass box as a room divider, focal point, conversation piece...

I also liked the Victorian mirrors on the ceiling idea...

Service was kinda arrogant. That's sorta the word for it, I guess...

I would go again though...
